Rent a 10x10 storage unit from Wytheville Storage (located on hwy 52 N) was a bad experience from day one, after you see just how demeaning the management is toward you. The manager demands you can only put clothing in these storage units and limits the value of goods on the lease agreement. I was charged to sweep the building, a month of rent for a security deposit and a deposit on a RFID key for the gate that has been broken for years (I was locked inside the chain-link fence and the security gate would not open).
Anytime you telephone the office, the management is argumentative toward you demanding you are wrong and has refused to update your address in their computer system, its not like all their customers have free time to come into their office in the afternoon due to limited office hours.
This is when management became aggressive collecting unearned rent. A delinquency notice was mailed to me and I have a firm belief its due to economic conditions affected by the COVID Pandemic.
I wrote a letter of complaint to Maple Garden Apts, Inc. (the address on the envelope) requesting accounting information because I know I paid one additional month in advance and DO NOT owe any rent!
Notice was sent to me to move my personal belongings to another storage unit not owned by Phillip Enterprises, inc. within 30-days and the rent was increased two years ago. I did not receive any notice of any change to the lease agreement (or a copy) and Virginia code states its not enforceable unless proper notice is given to the tenant. NO ACCOUNTING information was provided within the statutory TEN DAYS! This is how the business model of "Threats and Intimidation" is directed toward a customer who pays rent every month by mail.
The past due amount in dispute was "CANCELLED" by the President of Phillip Enterprises, Inc. The monthly payment (check) was cashed a week after the aforementioned termination notice was sent out. A week after the rent payment posted to my checking account, the door was LOCKED OUT by management with one of their red locks and the rent was current as indicated on paperwork provided by this corrupt business. I was unable to remove all my property and these crooks are arguing that I still owe them more money after returning their gate key and unable to clean the BIRD NEST out of their storage building and the other property remaining due to management locking the door after asking me to remove all my belongings.
My advice to anyone considering renting a self-storage unit, stay far away from this company and any of their locations in Wytheville, Pulaski, Dublin and Radford Virginia.
